Nature is incredibly intricate. Evolving the tiniest things to the most specific tasks. She moves slowly, gently over time toward perfection within each species. Each in some way intertwined to the others around it, each organism with their own specific task and purpose. No life stands alone, untouched by others in its orbit. The orbits overlapping outwardly until they form a tapestry that is the universe in which we all live.
In our busy day to day we walk right past and over these interlacing organisms, one of them ourselves, barely if ever giving much thought to things around us we affect. Our lens tends to be narrow with little tolerance for the creatures beneath us or the environments. We affect a lot, from the creations of products to the interaction these products have on the existing environments in which we live. We tend to not think of all the interconnection. Even environments are interlaced, each existing overlapped and affected by the others surrounding it. Layers if you will and as organisms we live on the interlocking layers. We have so little respect for it, to the determinant of us all - the organisms that is, including us. Then we wonder why we have illness, cancer, diseases, fungal and bacterial infections. It’s the environment trying to break down the problem.
Us.
We are the problem.
From plastic pollution to forever chemicals to ruthless destruction of other organisms because they’re not convenient to the false environments we try to create. We take up their space, destroy their parts of the tapestry to build our own, very unnatural ones. It’s such a deeply engrained plight that almost none of us can avoid it now. Not without being a tribe deep in a landscape somewhere that is protected from infestation. Viewed as another protected species more than a culture.
Don’t get me wrong, at least we are trying to protect species. Well, some of us. While the machine continues to grind, breaking up the solid parts and spitting them back out as manufactured replicas of the very thing they are destroying. Ironic really.
So what happens when a species fails to evolve? Effectively that is. While we, as a species are moving in a direction, it’s the wrong direction. Destroying the environments as we go, ecosystems forever devastated. They will come back, as something else. But not while we stand watch, not the way we are now. We have started to turn lenses to the problem, to zoom in to see the devastation, to widen lenses to see the whole tapestry and the effect we are having on it. The question is will it be enough? Or is it too little too late? The efforts have taken hold, more and more not only aware, but willing to step up. However, there are just as many, in much higher positions of power, determined to turn a blind eye. To put human greed and consumption ahead of the necessary changes instead of turning to the creation of industries that solve the problems and replace the employment in the detrimental fields with employment in the business of correcting the wrongs and setting it all to rights for the future moving forward.
